SEPTIC SYSTEMS

Homes on Lake Santa Fe & Little Lake Santa Fe currently rely on individual septic systems. These septic systems can also cause nutrient loading and associated pollution in our lakes. Everyone who lives on the lake or a canal connected to the lake should ensure that their septic system is functioning properly. Malfunctioning septic systems can cause pollutants to flow directly into our lake. If you are building a new or replacement septic system the drain field should be located as far from the lake as possible.

We should also be aware of what we put into our septic system. Even if our septic system is functioning properly, nutrients such as phosphorus can leach through the soil and enter the lake. Many soaps and detergents are phosphorus based. Use of phosphorus based soaps and detergents can ultimately pollute our lake. Try to use cleansers that are either low in phosphates or phosphate free.
