Who we are

Current Problems is a non profit organization based out of Gainesville, Florida. We work to clean the waterways of North Central Florida not only by holding frequent cleanups, but by also providing outreach and educating the public on water quality issues. At any given time, you can find us working to clean rivers, lakes, springs, ponds, creeks, and wetlands in our area.

The beginning

Current Problems was established in 1993 when a small group of friends began working together to clean up the trash and contaminants in and along the banks of north Florida’s Santa Fe River.  Twenty five years later, this grassroots organization has expanded its focus to include urban creeks, rivers, ponds and lakes throughout north central Florida. Not only do we hold cleanups, but we provide educational materials and outreach to the public in an effort to improve water quality in our area.

OUR MISSION

To preserve and protect the water resources of North Central Florida for the use and enjoyment of wildlife and humans through action, awareness, and education.

Our Annual Events

Every year, we hold several annual events in Gainesville and the surrounding region. Getting the community involved in cleanups is one of the most important and rewarding parts of what we do. By holding regularly scheduled events, we can focus on outreach on creeks and waterways that are more impaired than others.

The Great Suwannee River Basin Cleanup

2018 marks the ninth year that this event will be held. In 2017, we surpassed 100,000 pounds of total trash pulled from the Suwannee River Basin during this cleanup. The cleanup encompasses the Suwannee River and it's tributaries and floodplain. Held in the fall, we assign different groups to sections of the basin over a span of three months (from September through November).

Newnans Lake Cleanup

This event is typically scheduled during the last weekend of September and is usually our first major event of the fall. We work along Newnans Lake, its parks, and it's tributaries to pick up trash. We hold this event in partnership with Gainesville Area Rowing.

The Clean Creek Revival

This event is held in March of every year and encompasses all of the Gainesville area creeks. First Magnitude Brewery helps us to host this event every year by throwing a party after the cleanup. In 2018, we collected 6,590 pounds of trash in just 2.5 hours with over 170 volunteers.
